University College Cork and Kerry General Hospital forge links
24.04.2009

Links between University College Cork (UCC) and Kerry General Hospital (KGH) are set to increase with the opening today (Friday, April 24th 2009) of a new Multi-disciplinary Education Room at Kerry General Hospital. The Official Opening was performed by Professor David Kerins, Dean, School of Medicine, UCC.
For the past year, UCC medical students have attended Kerry General Hospital in increased numbers and have benefited greatly from the excellent clinical teaching. Kerry General Hospital is a busy, acute general hospital with a comprehensive range of services in Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Radiology, Pathology and Laboratory services.

Speaking at the Opening today, Professor Kerins expressed his strong appreciation for the generous welcome and co-operation from staff and patients that the UCC medical students have experienced at the hospital and acknowledged the important contributions of KGH to the teaching of the students.  “The close relationship not only ensures students have the opportunity to observe the work of frontline medical staff but also has resulted in the introduction of ‘Inter-professional learning’. This gives students from different healthcare disciplines such as Physiotherapy and Nursing an opportunity to learn with, from and about each other.”  He said UCC was delighted to facilitate the provision of distance learning and foster the close links that have historically existed between the two institutions.  He went on:  “The Medical School at UCC is delighted to support the development of a teaching facility at Kerry General Hospital and expects that this resource will be of value, not only to the education of medical students at the hospital, but will also be an important resource in terms of the continuing professional development of all the hospital’s programmes and staff.”

In January 2008, Dr Claire O`Brien was appointed as Lecturer in Medical Education and Eileen Cooper as Executive Assistant.  Their respective roles include the co-ordination of teaching activities and supporting UCC medical students on rotation at the Hospital.

Kerry General Hospital Manager, Ms Margie Lynch said: “We welcome and look forward to strengthening the links between the Hospital and UCC. This is an important day for all who work here. Kerry General Hospital looks forward to providing clinical teaching for medical students in the future and to play its part in providing competent doctors well-equipped for their clinical role in treating and caring for patients.”
