27.04.2009

Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC welcomed Chancellor, Dr Javier Perez and Dr Fiona Crean, Director of the Institute of Modern Languages, Universidad San Jorge, Zaragoza, Spain to UCC on Friday last (April 24th 2009).
The purpose of the visit was to explore areas of mutual interest and explore possible areas of collaboration in the future.

Javier Perez Herreras (Gijon, 1967) is a Doctor in Architecture from the University of Navarre (Architecture 1992, PhD 1999). He began his academic career while he was completing his PhD between the Technical University of Madrid and the School of Architecture of Pamplona. Between 1996 and 2005, he was a lecturer at the Public University of Navarre as well as a visiting lecturer at other schools and universities.

Since the start of his career, Perez Herreras has combined his academic career with his professional work, which he carries out in his studios in Pamplona and Madrid. In 2002, he founded, along with Javier Quintana, the Basic Workshop of Architecture, which consists of a young team of team of architects who base their work on professionalism and humanistic values. One of the main pillars of this workshop is the training of architects, where technical training broadens out into the research of humanism.

His academic and professional work is based on persistent research into new concepts of living styles and the new kinds of cities they generate. Some of these research projects include “Houses for Teachers” or the “Umbrella House”, which was selected as one of the ten best works constructed in Spain by the Camuñas Foundation in 2006. He has been awarded prizes for his other projects in several contests; the Parliament of Navarre or the Technological Center for Ericsson in Spain. He has also been been awarded prizes at the Biennials of FAD, Hispalyt, COAVN, Construmat, Veteco, Sedigas and Camuñas.

His work has been exhibited at itinerant exhibitions and he has published articles in national and international monographic magazines. He represented Spain at the 8th  Biennial of Architecture in Venice. He is also the author of "Wind boxes", an essay reflecting on contemporary living styles as viewed from inside a box. He has just published “Ideological: a notebook of equations”, which is a search into the connections between words and architecture and their influence on his creativity and his teaching.

He was appointed Rector of San Jorge University in April, 2005.
