UCC’s College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) hosts 2009 Public Lecture Series
06.01.2009

The popular Annual SEFS Public Lecture Series will begin its 2009 programme on Wednesday, January 14th with a lecture by Professor William Reville on "Darwin’s Legacy".
The lectures will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings at 8.00pm in Boole 4 Lecture Theatre and will run until Wednesday, March 25th.

The lecture series will cover a wide range of contemporary issues, including Global Warming, Ethics of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Radio Astronomy, Future Energy Infrastructure, Vitamin D and Health, Wireless Sensors, Low Level Exposure to Dangerous Chemicals, Food for Health, Quantum Mechanics, and the Politics/Economics of Nitrogen Fixation.

In the first lecture, Professor Reville who is Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Public Awareness of Science Officer and College Radiation Officer at UCC will discuss how the theory of evolution through natural selection is probably the most important and influential scientific theory ever formulated.  It is not only the central unifying theory in biology but has important implications for many other fields, e.g. religion.  Even today some people refuse to accept the theory and it can generate heated debate.  In this lecture, the theory will be explained in outline and some of its major implications will be discussed.

All the lectures will be filmed and the films will be posted on the UCC Public Understanding of Science website http://understandingscience.ucc.ie  The 2007 and 2008 Public Lectures are already posted on this website.

The SEFS Annual Public Lectures are very popular and regularly attract large attendances. Full details of the lectures can be consulted by visiting website http://understandingscience.ucc.ie/pages/SEFS_LectureSeries_2009.pdf.

The lecture series is organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer, SEFS.  The first lecture will take place at UCC’s Boole Lecture Theatre 4 at 8pm on Wednesday, January 14th.

Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
