UCC toasts Heineken donation
21.12.2009

Heineken Ireland has presented €50,000 worth of Beamish & Crawford laboratory equipment to UCC.
The equipment has been installed in the university’s brewery in the Faculty of Food & Nutritional Sciences where research includes the use of alternative grains as raw materials to allow the brewing industry  reduce its carbon-footprint. The development of gluten free beer and the investigation of alternative uses of waste products from the brewing industry are also being investigated by Professor Elke Arendt, UCC Professor of Cereal and Beverage Science and her team.

The main piece of equipment donated is a SCABA Beer analyser which measures many analytical parameters associated with high quality beer production, including alcohol Original Gravity. Other equipment used for microbiological and analytical testing was also donated which will enhance further research into brewing in Ireland.

According to Declan Farmer, Heineken Ireland’s Corporate Affairs Manager,  “This year has been a significant one with the closure of the Beamish & Crawford brewing facility in Cork city. The donation by Heineken Ireland of the Beamish & Crawford laboratory equipment to UCC follows the donation in mid- year of its archives to the City Library. In many ways, it ensures that the legacy of Beamish & Crawford will be with us for some time to come.”

“We are delighted to have received the laboratory equipment from Heineken” says Professor Arendt  “as it will help us develop our research in the malting and brewing area.”
