12.06.2009

Two Teams from University College Cork (UCC) were awarded top prizes at the 2009 Enterprise Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, Ireland’s biggest third level business awards.
The award ceremony, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland and Cruickshank Intellectual Property Attorneys, was held in the University of Ulster, Coleraine. This year marks the 26th anniversary of the Enterprise Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, an all island competition that offers third level student teams from the island of Ireland the chance to explore business ideas and realise their entrepreneurial ambitions.

UCC’s ‘G-One Trading’ team won the Export Capability Award, while ‘Epitome IT’ won an Award of Merit, securing €10,000 in prize money between the UCC entries.

G-One Trading received significant guidance from their industry mentor Mary Byrne (CEO, Statistical Solutions). While Epitome IT were supported by Dr Geraldine Boylan and Dr Louise Burgoyne (Both Neonatal Research Group, School of Medicine, UCC) and Industry Mentor Ed Crosbie (ATMS).  The two UCC teams are students from the MBS(BIS) programme and their Innovation module is directed by Dr. Brian O’Flaherty and Dr. John O’Donoghue.

Award of Merit

Epitome IT is developing a web-based service for Neonatal Units for the online diagnosis of seizures in premature babies. Newborn babies, highly susceptible to brain seizures, require EEG brain scan interpretation and seizure treatment, ideally within 6 hours of seizure occurrence. A lack of specialists with EEG reporting skills on hand, often results in delayed diagnosis. This service will allow neonatal specialists to upload an EEG scan where a consultant with EEG reporting skills can view and report on an EEG resulting in faster reporting of seizures and faster administration of effective treatment, therefore helping to prevent the long term problems and costs associated with untreated brain seizures.
