Calling Contract Researchers at UCC

The Association of Research Contract Staff (ACRS) was set up in UCC in 2006 to provide help, advice and a voice for research contract staff both within UCC and nationally.

The Association of Research Contract Staff (ACRS) was set up in UCC in 2006 to provide help, advice and a voice for research contract staff both within UCC and nationally.
There are at present more than 700 contract researchers in the university. According to Dr Gordon Dalton, Chairman of the Association: “Contract researchers now form a sizeable proportion of the overall staff numbers in UCC and play an increasingly important role in the academic output of the university. Many of these researchers feel that there is no voice to represent them and that many of the problems that are unique to them have not been properly identified and addressed.”
The Association is run by contract researchers entirely on a voluntary basis. ACRS strives to equally represent research contract staff at all stages of their careers with representation from all four Colleges.
The aim of ARCS for 2009 is to expand its presence and functionality in UCC in three main areas. The first aim is to consolidate its role and function as a lobbying and information facility for UCC researchers. This will involve sourcing regular funding for the society, which as yet has not been determined. Expanding on this, ARCS in 2009 will be starting regular social events for researchers to meet and network.
An important step in the recognition of ARCS is the invitation by the Academic Research Council in UCC to attend their meetings. This will hopefully allow ARCS to have a more active role in UCC research initiatives and activities. The Association is in the process of identifying all contract researchers within the university, in cooperation with the HR department. If you are a contract researcher and would like to become a member of the group or become involved in the committee, you are invited to email arcs@ucc.ie so that your contact details can be added to the list.
