UCC team to represent Ireland in Investment Research Challenge
26.03.2009

A team of UCC students has been selected to represent Ireland on April 1st next at the European Regional Final of the Global Investment Research Challenge organised by the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute.
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) hosted the Final of their inaugural Irish Investment Research Challenge in Dublin where the UCC team overcame competition from University College Dublin (UCD), National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the University of Ulster to win the trophy and a cash prize of €1,000. The challenge for the UCC Team was to present a rigorous investment case on the Kerry Group.

UCC was represented by Godfrey Akileng, Domenico Campa, Ciara Connolly and Gillian O'Carroll.  Ciara and Gillian are students on the Masters in Corporate Finance and Accounting degree and both Domenico from Italy and Godfrey from Uganda are undertaking PhD studies in Accounting also at UCC.

Following their national success, the UCC team will now compete against the national winners of France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom in the European Final in London. The winners of that competition will represent Europe in the Global Investment Challenge, also in London, on April 2nd where they will compete against teams representing the Americas, Asia Pacific and New York.

The Challenge is an annual educational initiative designed to promote best practices in equity research to students from business schools worldwide through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis. Leading industry professionals mentor business and finance students on how to research and report on a publicly traded company.  “This competition offers university students a valuable opportunity to showcase their analytical skills in front of a professional investment audience,” said Joe Kavanagh, President of CFA Ireland.

The research challenge spanned a five month period and was facilitated by Kerry Group through a general presentation to the assembled teams in November and a series of one-on-one calls with each team in early 2009. The UCC team was mentored by Mark Mulcahy, CFA and Dr Ray Donnelly, both lecturers in Accounting and Finance in the College of Business and Law, UCC and by Oliver McClure from PI Investment Management.

Speaking for the team, Ciara Connolly said she was delighted that the hard work had paid off and credited their success to the synergy of the accounting and finance elements on their Masters and PhD programmes.  Professor Irene Lynch-Fannon, Head of the College of Business and Law, congratulated the students and faculty on their achievement which once again showcases the dynamism of UCC’s business programmes and wished them every success as they progress to the European final.
