UCC prescribes for Finland!
15.10.2009

UCC’s Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery recently welcomed a delegation from the Universities of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä, Vaasa and Oulu, Finland.
The purpose of the visit was to outline the curriculum development in the area of nurse prescribing.  One of the most important and significant recent developments in Irish health care has been the enactment of legislation giving prescriptive authority to nurses and midwives.  In response to this, and under the directive of the Minister for Health and Children, Ms Mary Harney, the education programme for nurse prescribing was developed in UCC.

The Finnish Parliament is planning to introduce legislative changes comparable to those introduced by the Irish Parliament in 2006 providing for the extension of prescriptive authority to nurse and midwives.

Ms Rena Creedon, Programme Coordinator for Nurse Prescribing and Ms Elizabeth O’Connell, Clinical Coordinator welcomed the delegation and introduced the visitors to the nurse prescribing multidisciplinary team from UCC's School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Medicine, and School of Pharmacy. The visiting group was briefed on the content, assessment and quality assurance issues of the education programme. They also gathered information on how the programme is structured and delivered.

The delegation also met with nurse prescribers currently practising at the Cork University Hospital to discuss the positive impact nurse prescribing has had on care delivery to date.
