Annual Austrian History Lecture

The European Studies programme which is run by UCC’s School of History and School of Geography and Archaeology will host the Annual Austrian History Lecture on Tuesday next, October 20th at 5pm.
The lecture titled: “The Cohesion of the EU in Foreign Policy Matters: How do Austria and Ireland fit in?” will be delivered by Dr Paul Luif, Austrian Institute for International Politics, Vienna.

Dr Paul Luif obtained the Doctorate of Law from the University of Vienna in 1971. He pursued further studies in political science at the Vienna Institute of Advanced Studies between 1972 and 1974 and was assistant professor for International Relations at the University of Salzburg between 1974 and 1980. Since then he has worked as a Senior Research Fellow of the Austrian Institute for International Politics, Vienna. He continues to give specialist courses in the universities of Vienna and Salzburg.
 
His research specialisation, distinguished publications record and expertise in the fields of EU Enlargement; European Integration; Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU; Small States in the EU and the Foreign Policies of Neutral/Non-Aligned States have earned him a major international reputation. In 1983 he was a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of International Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. In 1985, he was a Visiting Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs in Stockholm. In 2003, Dr. Luif was the Senior Visiting Fellow at the EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris. In 2007, he was Visiting Professor at the International Christian University in Tokyo where he gave a course on the Internal Security of the EU. In 2008, he was Fulbright Professor at Loyola University, New Orleans.
 
Dr Luif is a member of the Austrian Society for Political Sciences; of the International Studies Association; of the EU Studies Association and EU-Consent; Constructing Europe Network. He is Co-editor of Österreichischen Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft (Austrian Journal of Political Sciences); he is a member of the editorial board of Perspectives. The Central European Review of International Affairs and he is a member of the international advisory board of the journal Politics in Central Europe.

The lecture will be delivered on Tuesday, October 20th 2009 at 5pm in Room G04, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex.  Admission is free and all are welcome.
