UCC Medical Society hosts Public Awareness Day 2009
01.04.2009

UCC Medical Society hosted a campus-based Public Health Awareness Day on Monday, March 23rd.  The event was organised in conjunction with the Family Medicine Society and the newly-established Sláinte Society.

The aim of this initiative was to address the health issues most relevant to the entire student population.  Issues highlighted included cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, men’s and women’s health, sexual health, the risks associated with excess alcohol and tobacco consumption, drugs of abuse and their adverse effects and the identification of the broader determinants of health.

With the aid of renowned and respected organisations such as the Irish Red Cross, the Irish Heart Foundation, The Irish Kidney Association and the Irish Blood Transfusion Services, the event was extremely interactive.  CPR demonstrations, blood pressure and blood glucose checks, guidance on self-breast/testicular examinations and calculations of BMI were offered throughout the day.

The success of the event was exemplified by the tremendous interest and support seen from students of all ages and disciplines.
