European and Chinese academics discuss EU-China relations in a new world order
30.03.2009

Facing the unprecedented global economic crisis. Europe and China need to take positive steps to prevent their relations becoming openly antagonistic and take an active role in crisis management, warn UCC political scientist Dr Andrew Cottey and UCC China watcher Dr Joern-Carsten Gottwald.
“Some hope that China can play a major part in responding to the global economic crisis by using its financial weight as part of a global stimulus package and by contributing to a strengthened and reformed International Monetary Fund. At the same time, however, there are fears that trade relations between China and the world’s other major trading powers, such as the EU and the US, could easily descend into protectionism, or even outright trade wars”, they said. China will be meeting with other major powers at the G20 (group of 20) summit in London later this week.

The Department of Government and the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies (UCC) are hosting an international workshop on “EU-China Relations: Developments, Challenges, Prospects”, in Kinsale, Co. Cork from March 29th-31st. The meeting will bring together European and Chinese experts to discuss bilateral relations between the EU and China and the range of global issues now facing the two powers.

Speakers at the workshop include Professor Zhu Liqun, Vice-President, China Foreign Affairs University, Beijing, Professor Kenneth Chan, Baptist University, Hong Kong, Professor Hanns W. Maull, University of Trier, Germany, Dr Sebastian Bersick, German Institute for International and Security Studies (SWP), Berlin and Dr Flora Sapio, Centre for Advanced Study on Contemporary China, Turin, Italy. The topics discussed range from China and the Rule of Law and Chinese policy in Africa to the EU, China and Climate Change.
