UCC marks World Digestive Health Day with Public Forum on IBS
20.05.2009

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder characterized most commonly by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea, is a problem which affects millions of individuals worldwide.
On World Digestive Health Day (WDHD)  (May 26th 2009) the World Gastroenterology Organisation will focus the attention of the global gastroenterology community on IBS. To coincide with this event, UCC will host a Public Forum focusing on IBS.  The event is being organized by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), in association with Danone, and will take place on Tuesday, May 26th at 7pm in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex.

The forum will be chaired by Professor Ted Dinan, Professor of Psychiatry, UCC and Principal Investigator at the Science Foundation Ireland-funded Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre.  Professor Dinan will discuss recent studies on the causes of IBS.

Dr Anurag Agrawal, MD, University of Manchester will speak about the use of Probiotics in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.  IBS is of particular interest to Dr Agrawal.  He is part of the South Manchester Functional Bowel Service which is devoted to looking after patients as well as undertaking physiological and clinical research on IBS.

Ms Sarah Keogh, Dietician, The Albany Clinic, Dublin will offer practical dietary and nutritional advice to patients. Ms Keogh has worked in hospitals both in Ireland and the UK and was Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Bon Secours Hospital in Glasnevin before setting up practice at the well-known Albany Clinic in Dublin which specialises in bowel disorders.

Professor Eamon Quigley, Professor of Medicine at UCC and Principal Investigator at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre speaking as President of the World Gastroenterology Organisation explained:  "World Digestive Health Day was initiated by the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) to focus attention on global issues in digestive health and digestive diseases. Past themes have included Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis and nutrition; this year, our topic is irritable bowel syndrome a truly global problem which leads to much suffering for those affected but which is often underappreciated by the medical community. The goal of this year's WDHD is to give IBS the prominence it truly deserves and to, thereby, promote greater understanding of IBS and those affected and generate new research which will ultimately lead to better treatments for this common disorder."

The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre is a UCC/Teagasc Research Centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry, focusing on gastrointestinal health and development of therapies for debilitating disorders such as Crohn's disease, colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and food poisoning (http://apc.ucc.ie).

The Forum will take place on Tuesday, May 26th from 7-8.30pm in Lecture Theatre G01, Brookfield Health Science Building, College Road, UCC.  Patients, families and friends are all welcome. Admission is free.
