UCC academic analyses consequences of Georgia war
25.02.2009

Dr Andrew Cottey of UCC’s Department of Government will deliver a lecture on the topic of "After the Georgia War: European Security and the former Soviet Space" this evening Wednesday, February 25th at NUI Maynooth’s Centre for the Study of Wider Europe.
In his talk at NUI Maynooth, Andrew Cottey will examine the consequences of the ‘five day war’ in Georgia last August, which resulted in Russia occupying the Georgian region’s of South Ossetia and Abhazia and the two regions declaring themselves independent states. Dr Cottey will argue that the Georgia war was not simply a local conflict but rather part of a larger struggle for influence in the former Soviet Union, with implications for NATO and the European Union.

Andrew Cottey is Senior Lecturer and Jean Monnet Chair in European Political Integration in the Department of Government, University College Cork. He is author of ‘Security in the New Europe’, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2007.
