“Nanomaterials – Competing at the Top and Research from the Bottom up” – UCC Lecture
25.02.2009

UCC’s Research Highlights Lecture Series will continue with the next lecture on Friday next, February 27th when Professor Michael Morris will deliver a lecture on the subject of materials science at the nanoscale level.
There is a widely held view that nanoscience and nanotechnology are emerging areas of research that allow the exploitation of the unique properties of nanoscale objects to generate new functional ‘nanomaterials’.  Whilst the terms are relatively new, many of the fundamentals that underpin the physical sciences and engineering in the area of nanometre scale materials are well-established. For example, nanoscale chemistry has been the cornerstone of the chemical industry since its advent in the latter half of the 19th century.  Whilst the generation of properly defined nano-dimensioned objects can be exacting, the real challenges lie in ‘engineering’ these into functional materials or architectures (often described as a ‘bottom-up’ approach).   These concepts are illustrated with reference to the challenges faced in the production of nanoelectronics in the future.

In this talk, Professor Morris will highlight some of the work in UCC’s Department of Chemistry that focuses on the generation of nanopatterned thin films and nanomaterials and how these may be used for developing electronic materials and structures.  In this work, the contribution of the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) in developing infrastructure for synthesis, processing and characterisation of nanomaterials will be highlighted.   Investment through PRTLI has also allowed the recruitment of highly motivated researchers for building world-class research teams.  This has allowed UCC scientists to compete with the top-rated research groups in the world.

Michael Morris is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at UCC and Director of the Nanolectronics Research Strand in the SFI funded CRANN centre based in Trinity College Dublin.

To celebrate 10 years of Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.

The Lecture Series will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.

The lecture will take place on Friday, February 27th, at 1pm in Kane G2, UCC.  Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
