Tyndall renews contract with European Space Agency
09.07.2009

Tyndall National Institute, UCC, announced on Wednesday, July 8th 2009 the renewal of a five year contract worth over €750,000 with the European Space Agency (ESA).
The contract will provide advanced microelectronic technical support to its European Space Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands, a test centre and hub for European space activities.

ESA is at the forefront of space science and requires suppliers to meet the highest international technical standards. Tyndall, a leading European microelectronics research institute, will provide ESA with advanced services in the evaluation of integrated circuits and components and the investigation of new technologies for space through an ESA Microelectronics Technology Support Laboratory (MTSL) based at Tyndall.

ESA demands zero quality risk with products and materials sourced from its extensive supplier base around Europe. Once it has carried out its own rigorous testing and reengineering processes, ESA requires that a qualified third party exercise an independent analysis to ensure that the products and materials meet the highest quality specifications

High quality miniaturized components with precision workmanship are critical to the performance of spacecraft electronics and systems. Professor Roger Whatmore, Tyndall CEO said, “Tyndall has been working with ESA for almost 20 years and its engineers and researchers have acquired an in-depth understanding of ESA’s needs. This enables Tyndall to provide ESA with valuable insights into a wide range of new and emerging technologies that will enhance the performance of next generation components and materials. This ongoing relationship will help to keep ESA informed of advances in Tyndall’s research that may benefit future ESA projects”.

“This contract increases the range of Tyndall technologies available to ESA and is important to Tyndall in sustaining its activity in this area during the current volatile economic climate”, commented Professor Whatmore.

With support from ESA, HEA and SFI, Tyndall has built up a unique research infrastructure base and continues to expand its capabilities. A state-of-the-art research building is now nearing completion to support next generation technology development, and it represents a unique and remarkable addition to Ireland’s world class capabilities in semiconductor devices and materials.
