The digestive path
10.11.2009

1500 primary and secondary pupils from schools throughout Cork city and county learned all about the digestive system when they attended “It takes Guts” interactive shows in the City Hall Cork.
The event, as part of Science Week, was presented by a team from the Science Museum in London as part of Science Week and continues today (November 10th 2009). The shows taught students about their digestive systems, looking at food groups, balanced diets and digestion.  Students followed the journey of food from your mouth, through the acid bath in your stomach, along metre after metre of pulsating guts, and then… out the other end.  The shows, featuring video footage of people's insides, were very enthusiastically received by the young audiences.

This event was organised by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) as part of the MicrobeMagic@schools programme, which has successfully engaged with over 25,000 students in the past five years.  The APC is a UCC/Teagasc Research Centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry.  This event was supported by an unrestricted grant from Yakult Ireland.

“‘It takes guts’ activity packs were provided to each teacher which included simple experiments that the students can carry out back in the classroom as well as a quiz to test their knowledge.  Schools registered for the Discover Primary Science, Award of Science Excellence program, can log this activity in their Discovery Log and gain credits towards achieving their award”, explained Andrea Doolan, APC.
