Symposium on European Citizenship

The Alliance Française de Cork and the College of Business and Law, UCC hosted a Symposium on European Citizenship on Tuesday last, September 1st 2009.

The programme included four thought-provoking panel discussions titled: “Women and Europe”, “Justice: rights and responsibilities of the European citizen”, “National Identities within European Culture and Identity” and “Green Citizenship”. 

Professor Irene Lynch-Fannon, Head of College of Business and Law chaired the first panel which featured keynote speaker, Nicole Fontaine, former President of the European Parliament. Alan Dukes, President of the Alliance Francaise Dublin, Dermot Keogh Professor of European Integration Studies at UCC and Senator Deirdre de Burca, Green Party, were among a group of eminent speakers from European institutions who addressed the various topics within their panels. “The College of Business and Law in conjuction with Alliance Francaise de Cork was delighted to host this most timely, enlightening and informative Symposium particularly in light of the forthcoming Lisbon Treaty Referendum” said Professor Lynch-Fannon.

Distinguished guests who attended the Symposium included the Lord Mayor Cllr Dara Murphy, the Turkish, Nigerian and South African Ambassadors and a representative from the Romanian Embassy as well as representatives from various business and interest groups. The keynote address was delivered by Mr Dan Mulhall on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin. Mr Mulhall, who is a graduate of UCC, and currently serves as the Head of the EU Division in the Department of Foreign Affairs will become the Irish Ambassador to Germany in November.
