Success for UCC Students
11.11.2009

Five UCC students were presented with gold medals recently by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese at an awards ceremony for the Undergraduate Awards of Ireland. The ceremony took place at the Royal Irish Academy.

The successful UCC students were:

  • Lorraine Chadwick, Economics
  • Abigail Rowe, History
  • Dairine Taaffe, Education/Early Childhood Studies
  • Fred English, Medicine
  • Drew Reid, Geography

The undergraduate awards of Ireland were established on October 29th 2008 to recognise and reward Ireland’s most innovative young knowledge creators, to catalyse the development of the brightest undergraduates, and to inspire all undergraduates to achieve.

The inspiration and original idea behind the awards came from Oisin Hanrahan and Paddy Cosgrave, two recent Trinity graduates and young entrepreneurs.

The awards are open to undergraduates across Ireland’s nine Universities. Submissions are drawn from the outstanding papers, essays and dissertations produced as a normal part of course work during each academic year. In its inaugural academic year, 2008-2009, 1,598 essays from undergraduates from the nine universities were submitted.

Pictured at the awards ceremony from L-R were: Fred English (gold medal in Medicine), Dr Geraldine Boylan (UAI judging panel chair),  Professor Patrick O’Flanagan (UAI judging panel chair), Dairine Taafe (gold medal in Education/Early Childhood Studies), Drew Reid (gold medal in Geography), Lorraine Chadwick (gold medal in Economics), Professor Grace Neville (UAI judging panel chair), Abigail Rowe (gold medal winner in History).
