“Empowering the Next Generation” - Showcasing International Development in UCC

Perspectives on international development placements will be the theme of a seminar taking place in UCC on Friday, November 13th from 1-5pm in G01, Western Gate Building, Western Road, UCC, organised by the Department of Food Business & Development.
Students of UCC’s BSc in International Development and Food Policy undertake a 6-month overseas work placement in the third year of their degree programme.  This afternoon seminar will highlight the students’ work which has taken them to a range of different organisations in countries such as Bangladesh, Ethiopia, France, Honduras, India, Ireland, Kenya, Malawi, Palestine, Tanzania, Uganda with organisations including ActionAid, Africa Direct, Edith Wilkins Foundation, Friends of Londiani, Irish Aid, Gorta, Mekelle University Ethiopia and Trócaire. Their work addresses key development challenges including poverty reduction, environmental degradation and climate change, gender equality, conflict and human rights.

Mr Micheál Martin, TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and HE Zerihun Reta Shumiye, Ethiopian Ambassador to Ireland will attend the seminar.

Following Registration at 1pm, Professor Michael Ward, Head of the Department of Food Business & Development at UCC will chair the Opening Session followed by a Welcome Address by Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, UCC.

The Opening Address will be delivered by Mr Micheál Martin, TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs at 1.25pm followed by the Keynote Address at 1.45pm by Mr Kevin Farrell, Government of Ireland Hunger Envoy titled: “Current Development Challenges and Future Contribution of Development Workers”.
 
An overview of the Placement Programme will be led by Dr Nick Chisholm, Department of Food Business & Development, and students of BSc International Development & Food Policy at 2.15pm.
 
The Second Session will be chaired by Dr Pat Enright, Department of Food Business & Development.  The session at 3pm will focus on detailed Presentations by students of the BSc International Development & Food Policy, specifically Honduras, India, Kenya and Palestine, while at 4.50pm H.E. Zerihun Reta Shumiye, Ethiopian Ambassador to Ireland will deliver the closing remarks.
