Students research infectious diseases
13.07.2009

Twelve science undergraduates may have their Eureka moment when they take part in a twelve week research programme hosted by UCC this summer.
The twelve students, chosen from a group of 150 applicants, come from universities in the US, Germany and Poland as well as from Irish third level institutions including Maynooth, CIT and UCC.

They will undertake a challenging research project in infectious diseases and microbe-host interactions that will introduce them to all aspects of laboratory based research from the inception of the project to the design and implementation of experiments.

The work is carried out within the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, the Department of Microbiology and the School of Pharmacy in UCC. The students will also have workshops on career development, ethics, core technologies and scientific writing as well as site visits to local pharmaceutical companies.

“This is a great opportunity for undergraduate students to undertake a real laboratory based research project over the summer months,” says Dr Cormac Gahan one of the organisers.  “We hope that the experience will encourage students to consider a career in research work. Indeed many past students of our programme have gone on to pursue PhDs”. This is the fourth year of the Microbe-Host UREKA programme which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland. The programme is run by UCC staff Dr Cormac Gahan, Dr Sally Cudmore and Ms Anne Daly.   The programme focuses upon host-microbe interactions and infectious disease and is one of three UREKA programmes based in UCC this summer.
