Science Week at UCC “Celebrating Creativity and Innovation”
09.11.2009

Hundreds of students from primary and secondary schools will visit UCC this week to participate in exciting events to celebrate Science Week. November 8th-15th is National Science Week which aims to promote the relevance of Science, Engineering and Technology in everyday life and make them exciting and accessible to all.

“Today’s school students will be Ireland’s future scientists and innovators and it is important to stimulate an interest in science at an early age” said UCC’s Head of College of Science, Engineering & Food Science (SEFS), Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick.

Students will learn how to detect Sickle Cell Anemia, witness the Magic of Chemistry, enter the world of the Microbiologist, learn about the planet at the Crawford Observatory and so much more.

A series of workshops, interactive demonstrations, presentations, tours and shows have been developed from many different disciplines within the College of SEFS including Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science.

The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and The Tyndall National Institute will also host a number of events. The Physics Department, in association with the French Embassy is hosting ‘Exploring the Universe, Our Next Steps’ at the Crawford Observatory. Science Café hosted by the UCC Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society will discuss the Placebo Response at Scotts Bar and is specifically aimed at participation from the general public and a Primary School Poster Competition aims to encourage younger students to think about invention in their everyday lives.
