Science for All 2009 Launched
16.01.2009

Science for All 2009, the UCC Postgraduate Student Public Presentation Competition, was recently launched by Dr Michael Murphy, President UCC.
The purpose of Science for All is to train and encourage postgraduate students in science, engineering and technology to present the results of their research to the general public in an easily understandable manner.  The competition is jointly organised by The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS), the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) and The Tyndall National Institute.

The Science for All competition is open to senior postgraduate students in SEFS, APC and Tyndall. Each student prepares a 10 minute talk illustrated with PowerPoint slides explaining their research.  Competition heats will be held from March 10th to 12th, judged by a panel of non-scientists.  Six students will be chosen to take part in the Final on April 1st 2009.  The winner of Science for All will go forward to the All-Ireland Intervarsity Science Speak competition to be held in the RDS Dublin in May 2009.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Murphy congratulated Suzanne McEndoo, last year’s winner of Science for All, who also went on to win the inter-varsity Science Speak competition in Dublin.  Dr Murphy also extended his congratulations to Kathleen Kelly, teacher, Ballincollig Community School, whose debating team won the first national final of the schools’ science debating competition, Debating Science Issues.

The Science for All competition is organised by Professor William Reville (Public Awareness of Science Officer, SEFS), Dr Catherine Buckley (Outreach Manager, APC) and Ms Aoife O’Donoghue (Outreach Manager, Tyndall National Institute), with assistance from the SEFS administrative office.
