Science and Technology Pilot Project
03.06.2009

Seven second level schools were represented at the launch of the Sensors in Transition pilot project in UCC recently. Each team of students delivered a Powerpoint presentation of the results they obtained on research projects they carried out in their schools using datalogging equipment.
“This Sensors in Transition Project has great potential as a means of increasing the numbers of students studying the physical sciences and promoting a positive attitude to careers in science, engineering and technology”, said Noel Brett, project coordinator in the Science and Technology Teaching and Learning Centre (STTLC).

The participating schools were from Beara, Bantry, Dungarvan, Carrigtohill, Kinsale, in addition to Cork City schools, Mayfield Community School and Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown. ‘Storing food in fridges’ (Bantry) resulted in creating awareness of significant variations in temperature within a fridge compartment.  ‘The technology in Formula One’ (Beara) involved a study of the relevance of sensor technology in relation to racing cars.  Numerous sensors were used by the Beara team, but the novel use of a drop counter to illustrate the viscosity of different grades of oil was acknowledged by many teachers. Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Bishopstown emerged victorious with their investigations on collisions and coefficients of restitution (cor).  This research was associated with getting greater distance in a golf drive, hence the title ‘Select your golf driver with care cor!

An in-depth evaluation of the pilot project is currently being investigated by Noel Brett of the Science and Technology Teaching and Learning Centre in UCC with a view to establishing the project as an annual event.

The project was launched in UCC by Minister Micheál Martin, TD and funded by the Higher Education Authority, the Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty, UCC and by Engineers Ireland (Cork Region).
