Renowned Photographer, John Minihan to give Presentation at UCC
19.01.2009

UCC Photographic Society is pleased to welcome renowned photographer, John Minihan, to UCC on Wednesday, January 21st 2009. He will discuss his work at 6pm in West Wing 6.
John Minihan was born in Dublin but spent his childhood in Athy, Co. Kildare. At the age of twelve he was brought to live in London.  He went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail and a photojournalist with the Evening Standard. For 30 years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives.

His stunning portfolio includes the iconic snap of a 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer, Samuel Beckett, Séamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, William Trevor, Dervla Murphy, Edna O'Brien, Benedict Kiely, Brian Moore and Maeve Binchy.  The Beatles, The Who and The Kinks have all passed before his lens.

While the digital era has transformed the photographic medium, Minihan continues to shoot in film, preferring black and white work that “monumentalises everyday scenes more strongly than colour can.”

UCC Photographic Society, one of the oldest societies of UCC, is delighted to welcome John Minihan. The society is open to all with an interest in taking, developing, or just looking at photographs! Various activities are planned throughout the year, including darkroom classes, competitions and weekend trips to scenic areas around Ireland.

The event is free and all are invited to attend.
