Public Lecture to focus on UCC’s Boole Centre for Research in Informatics
19.03.2009

UCC’s Research Highlights Lecture Series will continue with the next lecture tomorrow (Friday, March 20th 2009) when Professor John Morrison will outline the role of the Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) at UCC.
The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics was established in 2001 under the HEA PRTLI-3 funding initiative.  It brought together the expertise of the School of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Computer Science to carry out interdisciplinary research under the banner of Informatics.  The initial focus of the Centre covered three broad themes that both reflected the strengths of the constituent groups and encompassed fundamental topics in Information Theory, the Theory of Computation, and Computing Paradigms. At the time of establishment the BCRI was unique in Ireland. Today, the Centre members are continuing to secure research funding from a variety sources.

The BCRI has significant expertise in Mathematics and Computing – disciplines that are becoming increasingly important to many (if not all) research endeavours. Engaging with researchers from many disciplines has been a focus of the BCRI in recent times and currently the centre has many associated members from a multitude of disciplines across UCC. In this talk, Professor Morrison will describe the story of the BCRI to date from research to outreach. He will overview the contributions of the Centre to current high profile national projects and will outline the resources of the centre that are being made available to local, national and international researchers.

Professor John Morrison is co-Director of the BCRI and Associate Professor at the Computer Science Department, UCC.

To celebrate 10 years of PRTLI investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.

The Lecture Series will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.

The lecture will take place on Friday, March 20th at 1.00pm in Kane G2, UCC. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
