Provincial Hockey Awards for UCC students
19.05.2009

UCC students were recently honoured for their contribution to a superb season on and off the hockey pitch at the Munster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association (MBIHA) Awards.
Andrew Herbert, who is undertaking a Master’s in Corporate Finance and Accounting at UCC picked up one of the most prestigious of the 31 awards, the men's player of the year for 2008/09.

Andrew has had a superb season in midfield with his club Cork Church of Ireland, helping them to their third straight Munster Senior League title and winning his first cap for Ireland A against Belgium in April.

Meanwhile, the UCC Ladies Hockey Club have been named Club of the Year after one of their most successful seasons in recent history. They claimed the Munster Senior Cup for the first time since 1995 and also won the Examiner Cup, as well as reaching a third straight Chilean Cup intervarsity final, where they were denied a three-in-a-row by a golden goal from eventual Irish Senior Cup winners UCD.

In addition, the team contributed to one of the most exciting Munster league title races in years, one that went right down to the wire as they were defeated 3-2 by Cork Harlequins in a title playoff last month. Nonetheless, their second-placed finish was good enough to qualify them for the Irish Hockey League for the first time.

The club also provided 12 representatives to the Munster senior, U21 and junior teams throughout the season, including senior vice-captain Julia O'Halloran, while Audrey O'Flynn won her first Ireland A cap against Canada in January, bringing the number of girls who have worn green in the club to five.

Denis Pritchard, who forms one half of the coaching team along with Paidi Hartnett, was the first recipient of the Development Coach of the Year Award, partially due to his sterling work with UCC.

Meanwhile, the UCC Men's Hockey Club have also an award-winner in their ranks. The club's PRO, Alan Good, who is undertaking a BA in economics and sociology at UCC, received a Special Merit Award for his media coverage and promotion of the game in the Irish Examiner, where he is a sports writer and sub-editor, and on his website Southern Fried Hockey (http://www.southernfriedhockey.com)
