Primary school children discover the wonders of science
20.08.2009

Over 100 Primary school children between the ages of 8 and 12 recently participated in the Primary Science summer camps at UCC. The two-week programme included two courses - the original “Super Science” course where children experience a broad range of science subjects, and the newly developed “Sci Files-The Investigators” course.
The children experienced a range of scientific topics beginning with the atom and experiments with dry ice and non-Newtonian fluids. An understanding of DNA and cells enabled the children to view cells under the microscope and extract DNA from a variety of sources. The various effects of microbes on our lives were also explored along with the opportunity to become a forensic scientist for the day – the latter deemed to be one of the highlights of the programme! The dangers of global warming and the steps that can be taken to protect our planet from further damage were focused upon during the environmental science class, while the importance of food science was conveyed to all by making ice cream which was described by many as the best that they had ever tasted! Dr Miloslav Pravda and John Meehan, Chemistry with Forensic Science Degree Programme, Department of Chemistry, provided expertise in the chemistry and forensic science classes.

Co-ordinator of the summer camp, Jill Haynes, Biomerit Research Centre, Department of Microbiology and College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, explained that the aim of the programme is to increase children’s awareness of science through fun interactive classes while also demonstrating the importance of science in our day-to-day lives.

The summer camps culminated with a tour of the UCC campus co-ordinated by JP Quinn, Head of UCC’s Visitors’ Centre, and the presentation of certificates by Professor John O’Halloran, Vice Head of UCC’s College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, at the graduation ceremonies. The event was supported by the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, UCC, and the UCC Admissions Office.
