Prestige Prize
09.04.2009

Alex Copland, a post-graduate researcher in the Department of Zoology, Ecology and Plant Science, won the prize for the best student presentation at the recent British Ornithologist’s Union (BOU) spring conference at Leicester University.

The conference, “Lowland Farmland Birds III: delivering solutions in an uncertain world”, featured talks on a variety of topics related to the conservation of farmland birds throughout Europe. Alex’s presentation, co-authored by another UCC post-graduate researcher in ZEPS, Olivia Crowe, and Professor John O’Halloran, was titled “Agri-environment evaluation in Ireland, with special reference to Skylark”. This was based upon elements of his PhD, “The ecology of farmland birds in Ireland with special reference to agri-environment measures”, and included other research on bird distribution and habitat use being undertaken by Olivia Crowe.

The BOU is one of the world’s oldest ornithological bodies, and aims to promote ornithology and a better understanding of ornithology, birds and related issues, within the scientific and birdwatching communities. The BOU publishes the quarterly journal ,Ibis, which celebrate 150 year of publication this year. Further information on the BOU, and details of the upcoming Climate Change and Birds conference, can be found at www.bou.org.uk
