First Board Goes East

The first board meeting of UCC’s  Confucius Institute Board took place at Shanghai University on  March 25th last with Professor Wu Song, (co-chair) and Vice President of Shanghai University, in the chair. Professor Paul Giller, (co-chair) and Senior Vice President of UCC, addressed the board.

The UCC Confucius Institute was established in November 2007 in partnership with Shanghai University.

Professor Fan Hong, Director of UCC Confucius Institute, reported to the Board on the work of the Institute in 2008, outlining important contribution in the following areas: Chinese language teaching and learning for the UCC’s Chinese Studies degree programmes; Chinese studies research activities by co-hosting conferences/workshops and providing Irish PhD students with scholarships to study in China; outreach activities and the establishment of academic, cultural and educational links between China and Ireland. CIIr. Patricia Gosch, Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork and Pat Ledwidge, Cork City Council, together with six members from Shanghai University attended the meeting.

After the Board meeting the two universities discussed future cooperation between UCC and Shanghai University. Professor Zhou Zhewei, Executive President of Shanghai University, and Mr Dan Buggy, Deputy Manager of Cork City Council,  joined the discussion.
