Management & Marketing Department hosts Business Lecture Series
09.10.2009

The Department of Management & Marketing at UCC is presenting a series of lectures by Maurice Biriotti, Chief Executive of SHM, and Adjunct Professor to the Department of Management and Marketing.

The lecture series titled: “Re-humanizing Business” is an exciting and somewhat different lens through which the world of business is usually presented and one which should have wide appeal.

The first lecture takes place on Monday next, October 12th, 1-3pm, Council Room, North Wing.

In this opening lecture, Professor Biriotti will pose the questions: Does working in modern business challenge the sense we have of being human, of being truly ourselves? Does it de-humanize us? By looking at Rembrandt and recent advances in scholarship about his work, this lecture will lay out a new approach to these questions and will show why such an approach is of urgent importance in the contemporary business context.

The second lecture “Rehumanizing Business: Sophocles” will be delivered by Professor Biriotti on December 10th, followed by the third lecture “Rehumanizing Business: Tolstoy” on January 25th 2010.

The fourth and final lecture “Rehumanizing Business: Henry James” by Professor Biriotti will be delivered on March 1st.

Maurice Biriotti is Chief Executive of SHM, a specialist consultancy in London that was founded on a strong belief that human motivation is at the root of all business success, whether that involves the creation of propositions to market, cultures, business strategies or practices.  SHM has a high-profile client portfolio, which includes Unilever, Diageo, Tesco, Accenture, The Learning and Skills Council, The Department of Health and The NHS. Before setting up SHM, Biriotti was an academic and taught literature, philosophy, the media and cultural studies at a number of universities, including Birmingham, Zurich, Cambridge and Barcelona.

Since then, Biriotti has engaged in various ways with the problem of how to ‘bridge the gap’ between the academic world and the business world. He is passionate about the potential for these two worlds to engage in a rewarding dialogue – and is particularly keen to foster a truly multi-disciplinary approach, with an important contribution to be made by the Humanities.  He has continued to give talks and have strong links with universities such as UCL and Cambridge, and is a regular speaker at conferences on business and cultural topics.
