International conference on PhD Research in Microelectronics and Electronics
13.07.2009

This week, Tyndall National Institute and UCC are hosting the 5th international conference on PhD Research in Microelectronics and Electronics, PRIME 2009.
The conference opened today (Monday, July 13th 2009) and gathers 135 students and researchers from 15 countries for a full week of talks and workshop taking place across the UCC and Tyndall facilities.

“The conference will promote industrially-relevant research in the area of Microelectronic and Electronic Engineering.  It is a great opportunity to showcase the critical mass and state-of-the-art-facilities at UCC and Tyndall to an international audience”, commented Roger Whatmore, CEO Tyndall National Institute.

In its plan for the Smart Economy, Ireland has reiterated the importance of education and innovation in building a new economy.  While this international conference has an immediate impact of bringing over €200k into the local economy, for Peter Kennedy, Professor of Microelectronic Engineering and Vice-President for Research at UCC, the real benefits are for the long term.  “By showcasing our research and facilities, we are building links with individuals who will want to work with us in the short and long-term,” says Professor Kennedy.  “We are opening up opportunities for our own students and for the companies that will employ them.”

Tomorrow, Tuesday (July 14th 2009), a panel comprising industry, academia, and funding agencies, will debate the topical question “How should we educate our PhD students to prepare them for the real world?”

There will be a public lecture in UCC’s Boole basement at 5pm on Wednesday, July 15th, to celebrate the centenary of Marconi’s Nobel Prize.  The lecture, titled “Marconi the Innovator” will recall the key role played by Crookhaven in Marconi’s work.

Photographed at the opening of the conference were:  Professor Peter Kennedy, Vice-President for Research Policy and Support, UCC, Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC and Professor Franco Maloberti, University of Pavia, Italy.
