Global Research on Childhood
14.12.2009

A UCC team of academics from the Department of Applied Social Studies are travelling to Kolkata, India this week.
Dr Deirdre Horgan, Dr Shirley Martin and Dr Jacqui O'Riordan will give a seminar on child trafficking as part of an interactive session on “Child Trafficking: The need for a stronger child protection mechanism.” During their visit, they will also meet with members of the faculty and post-graduate students of the Institute of Social Change, Kolkata at the invitation of Professor Mazumdar, Director of the Institute.

The visit to Kolkata is funded by Irish Aid and is part of the team's ongoing study of and research on childhood globally. In this context, the team has been collaborating with Hope Foundation, and with researchers in Kolkata, in the development of learning materials for students on the BA Early Childhood Studies, UCC, and has conducted research in a number of areas related to childhood.

To date, the project has focused on developing learning materials on the following five issues: child trafficking, child labour, HIV/AIDS, child abuse, and religion, race and ethnicity, based on the work with which Hope Foundation, Cork and Kolkata is involved in North East India. The project employed an approach to teaching and learning that values the active participation of all involved in the process of teaching and learning, in particular students, so as to ensure the materials fully respond to their learning needs.

This phase of the project was also supported by National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL) and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences at UCC. At the core of this project is the belief that an understanding of global diversity is essential for contemporary early childhood practitioners and that involvement in this project contributes to the development of early years’ practitioners, who are advocates for children in an increasingly globalising world context.

The visit to Kolkata will incorporate site visits and research networking with partners with whom the group have been working over the past two years. A core part of the trip will also be the identification and establishment of work placements for students in the BA (Early Childhood Studies), UCC.
