Explore the options at UCC’s Postgraduate Study Information Week
27.01.2009

Are you confused about your postgraduate options or thinking of doing a PhD but not sure where to start? The answers to these questions can be found at UCC’s Postgraduate Study Information Week which will run from February 2nd to 6th 2009.

The first Postgraduate Study Information Week at UCC will offer students the opportunity to find about the university’s range of taught and research postgraduate opportunities. Organised by the Careers Service and Graduate Studies Office, it will inform all prospective applicants of postgraduate study options available at UCC.

With taught programmes ranging from conversion courses in areas such as Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business, to Masters degrees in Sustainable Energy or Marine Biology, there are lots of options to start exploring.

This week long event will see all needs catered for through two main exhibitions. The  Postgraduate Research Open Day will take place on February 4th from 12noon-3pm in the Aula Maxima and will showcase the research opportunities available and give guidance on how to apply for a Masters or PhD. The Postgraduate Studies Fair which follows on February 5th from 12noon-4pm will showcase taught postgraduate programmes available in 2009/2010.

Professor Alan Kelly, Dean of Graduate Studies is hopeful that the week will provide potential applicants with appropriate information course content, application procedures and career options to facilitate more informed decision-making. “Where a primary degree was once the passport to a good job, in today’s competitive environment more and more people are choosing to pursue postgraduate study to improve their prospects and set them apart from the competition”, he said.

In addition to the two exhibitions, there will be a series of short talks covering a wide range of topics. These will include postgraduate research funding, making research proposals, applying for postgraduate programmes, conversion courses, and the range of services available to every postgraduate student at UCC. Advice and guidance will be provided throughout the week by careers advisors, programme directors and graduate admissions personnel.
