Cork celebrates Chinese Year of the Golden Ox
26.01.2009

This is the Year of the Golden Ox according to Chinese tradition. ‘Silk and Bamboo’, the biggest Chinese New Year celebration in Cork will take place on Wednesday next, January 28th 2009 at 6pm in the City Hall, Cork.
The event is being jointly organised by the Cork City Council, International Education Office, the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute at UCC.

Highlight of the evening will include a performance by Artists of the Silk and Bamboo Trio, a leading Chinese instrumental group in the UK and Europe, award-winning acrobat Bin Zhang, and nationally and internationally acclaimed dancer Lingjuan Pan from China.

The musicians include CHEN Dacan on the erhu gaohu two-fiddles, LI Ming on the dizi, hulusi flutes and yangqin hammered dulcimer, and WANG Meng on the guzheng 21-zither.  As part of the UK Chinese Music Ensemble, the musicians have performed at festivals and cultural events all over the UK and Europe, are in demand for media and film recordings, and regularly offer educational activities in schools.  Apart from appearing at London Southbank's Purcell Room, and Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Royal Opera House and the Brighton and Edinburgh Festival, the musicians have also played in Europe – WOMEX (Spain), WOMAD (Sweden), Spolete (Italy), Malasa (Germany), France, and beyond – WOMAD (Canada).

Cork City Council, UCC, CIT, schools in Cork and Chinese communities and Irish communities will also participate in this event – one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations in Cork.

UCC has become Ireland’s leading university in terms of its engagement with China. Its student recruitment campaign, driven by the International Education Office, ensures that UCC draws a very large number of Chinese students to its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. There are currently 230 Chinese students attending UCC. This inward movement of Chinese students is complemented by the growing interest in Chinese Studies on the part of Irish students. There are 165 Irish and European students studying in BA in Chinese Studies;  BComm (International) with Chinese Studies; HDip and MA in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business; MPhil/PhD in Chinese Studies and some Chinese language courses at UCC.

The Lord Mayor of Cork and the Chinese Ambassador will join the celebration and wish Cork a very happy Chinese New Year.

Admission to the event is free and all are welcome.
