The 19th Annual Conference of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA) will take place in UCC on 2-5 September. The conference is the leading international forum for Second Language Acquisition research, which is concerned with theoretical and experimental approaches to exploring the processes and mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of language development beyond one’s first language
eTonguesAs part of the conference, an International Roundtable sponsored by the journal, Language Learning, will be held on the theme of ‘Input Perspectives on the Role of Learning Context in Second Language Acquisition’. The conference will include presentations in parallel sessions on all aspects of Second Language Acquisition research from researchers around the world, while the plenary presentations will specifically explore issues dealing with lexical acquisition, sociolinguistic competence, bilingualism and thought, and learner motivation.

The plenary speakers at the conference are: Paul Meara (University of Swansea) ‘Aristotle’s spider and the web of words’, Aneta Pavlenko (Temple University, Philadelphia) ‘Bilingualism and thought’, Vera Regan (University College, Dublin) ‘Sociolinguistic competence and identity in second language acquisition. A research programme’, and Ema Ushioda (University of Warwick) ‘Motivation and SLA: Bridging the gap’.
