The key elements required to start a technology company – either biotech or hi-tech - will be the focus of a conference taking place in UCC on June 9th next. Leading entrepreneurial experts will gather for the conference titled “Entrepreneurship - How to create a technology start-up”.
Organised by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) at UCC, the one-day event will have its theme the four pillars of success for a successful start-up, namely Technology, Market, Team and Finance. Cormac Kilty, founder and CEO of Biotrin will address this topic.

Chris Horn, Founder and Vice-Chairman of Iona Technologies and a serial entrepreneur, will deliver the keynote address on Entrepreneurship and Innovation while Keith O’Neill, Director, El Bio will discuss the importance of Entrepreneurship to Ireland’s Smart Economy.

The four themes of the Conference will be developed further in Case Study presentations from a number of Irish biotechnology and hi-tech start-up companies including Vivienne Williams, Founder and CEO of Cellix and Carl Jackson, Founder and CTO of SensL who will discuss technology and market.  Team and finance will be the subject of the presentations by Liam Kelly, Founder and CEO of NuaLight and Ivan Coulter, Founder and CEO of Sigmoid.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to hear about the key features of a business plan which will be presented by Frank Walsh from Enterprise Equity.

“One of the determinants of Ireland’s future economic well-being will be its success in stimulating business to do more R&D, promoting innovation and a culture of entrepreneurship amongst its researchers and fostering effective linkages between enterprise and academia. This one-day workshop aims to stimulate the research community to take their research to the next level, and commercialise their findings for the benefit of Ireland and society at large”, said Professor Fergus Shanahan, Director of the APC which is organising the event.

This event is open to anyone with a science/technology background and an interest in this topic, including PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, lecturers and members of the business community.

The Conference will take place in Devere Hall, University College Cork, on Tuesday, June 9th, 2009.   For more  information and registration details log onto http://apc.ucc.ie
