Cancer Research Lecture

UCC’s Research Highlights Lecture Series will continue with the next lecture tomorrow Thursday, April 23rd when Professor Gerald O’Sullivan will discuss the impact of research funded through the PRTLI programme in cancer.

The Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) is based in UCC and celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The Centre Director, Professor Gerald O’Sullivan will present a talk on the research activities currently being investigated at the CCRC and the impact the centre has had on translating research to clinical application for patients. His talk will look at the challenges facing clinicians and the potential for minimally invasive surgery to improve the quality of life for cancer patients. In terms of secondary cancer spread the talk will also examine the long-term potential impact of gene therapy to recruit the patients immune system in the elimination of circulating cancer cells.

Professor O'Sullivan, a graduate of UCC, was appointed consultant surgeon at the Mercy University Hospital, Cork in 1985 following surgical residencies in Ireland and the US. Professor O'Sullivan has been a Fellow of RCSI since 1980 and was elected member of Council in 1998. He is also the immediate past president of the RCSI, finishing his presidency in June 2008.  He is an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Glasgow and has been elected President of the European Surgical Association (ESA) at its recent annual meeting held in Vienna. A renowned surgeon and researcher, he was appointed Chair in the Department of Surgery at UCC in 1999 and is currently Director of the Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC). 

To celebrate 10 years of Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.

The Lecture Series will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.

The lecture will take place tomorrow Thursday, April 23rd at 1.00pm in the Aula Maxima, UCC. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
