Cambridge Historian to deliver Public Lecture

Professor Peter Burke, Emmanuel College, Cambridge will deliver a public lecture at UCC on Thursday, May 28th at 7pm in Boole VI Lecture Theatre. The lecture is titled “Translating Texts, Translating Cultures".
Emeritus Professor of Cultural History, Professor Peter Burke holds an MA (Oxon and Cantab), Hon PhD (Lund), FBA and is a Member of the Academia Europaea, FRHistS.

Educated by the Jesuits and at Oxford (St John’s and St Antony’s), Peter Burke taught in the School of European Studies, University of Sussex from 1962 to 1979 as Assistant Lecturer and Lecturer in History and as Reader in Intellectual History. He moved to Cambridge to become a Lecturer in History and subsequently Reader in and then Professor of Cultural History. In Emmanuel, he has served as Librarian and Archivist. He has published 23 books, including 'The Italian Renaissance' (1972), 'Popular Culture in Early Modern Europe' (1978), 'The Fabrication of Louis XIV' (1992), 'The Art of Conversation' (1993), 'A Social History of Knowledge' (2000), 'Eyewitnessing' (2000), 'What is Cultural History?' (2004) and 'Languages and Communities in Early Modern Europe' (2004) and has been translated into 28 languages. He is married to a Brazilian historian, Maria Lúcia García Pallares-Burke.

Following the lecture, there will be a series of workshops on Friday, May 29th as part of the Master Class on Translation Studies.  Professor Brendan Dooley will introduce the workshops which will be given by Stiofán O Cadhla, Dr Angela Ryan and Professor William Reville.

The Lecture and Master Class is being organised by the Graduate School, College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences.
