UCC has secured over €7 million in funding to upgrade 28 of its science laboratories.
The sum of €5,040,000 including €849,000 has been received for equipment for the Kane Building under the Higher Education Authority's (HEA) Research Facilities Enhancement Scheme (RFES) 2008. The Microbiology Department is also a winner under the scheme, gaining €2.2million for its laboratories in the Food Science and Technology building.
The RFES is specifically directed towards enhancing already existing research facilities in the third-level sector.
The Kane Building project involves the upgrading of approximately 1,400msq or 20 existing research laboratories and research support
facilities in Chemistry and Physics. The building is over 35 years old and the laboratories require extensive refurbishment works. The area being refurbished equates to approx 10% of the area of the building and will aid the work of national and international PhD researchers in the fields of analytical chemistry, with a new 'wet lab' for environmental research, and areas of physics such as photonics.
Capital Projects Officer, Niall McAuliffe said the buildings were in great need of the funding. "The funding received was an acknowledgement by the Government that the facilities were old. They were functioning but needed the upgrade so we are looking forward to getting the work underway," he said.
