University College Cork (UCC) Receives Grant for Post Graduate Pharmacy Programme
28.01.2008

The School of Pharmacy at University College Cork has announced that it has received a grant of €190,000 over a two year period from United Way International - in collaboration with the Amgen Foundation - to support its newly launched MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems.

A part-time distance learning programme, the aim of the course is to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of bio-pharmaceutical sciences relating to the development, manufacture and distribution of medicinal products. The course offers a combination of expert knowledge and practical training, prepared and reviewed by professionals from industry, academia and regulatory bodies. While also fulfilling the educational requirements for Qualified Person (QP) status, as required by EU Directives, the course is primarily designed to provide knowledge and experience to all technical, regulatory, quality and managerial staff within the industry. Course delivery is delivered via distance learning over a two-year cycle, during which eleven modules are studied in the first eighteen months with a research project being carried out for the remaining six months.

"The School of Pharmacy at UCC is one of the first European recipients of an Amgen Foundation grant, reflecting our confidence in UCC to deliver professional development and pivotal post-graduate research experiences to people in the bio-pharmaceutical industry," said Jean Lim, president, Amgen Foundation. "We share a vision to provide leadership for scientific excellence."

Colman Casey, Director Training, School of Pharmacy, UCC commented, "I want to thank the Amgen Foundation and United Way International for their great support. The number and quality of post graduate scientists is critical to cementing Ireland's already strong reputation as a biopharmaceutical centre of excellence. This distance learning programme will make post graduate study more accessible to participants both nationally and internationally. This commitment by the Amgen Foundation reinforces how industry and education can partner together for the benefit of students, patients and the broader community." Professor Caitriona O'Driscoll, Head of the School of Pharmacy, has welcomed this generous initiative and sees it as a unique opportunity to establish an ongoing interaction with Amgen.

The Amgen Foundation and United Way International (UWI) work together to enhance the quality of international grantmaking to not-for-profit organisations outside of the US. Through this collaboration, the Amgen Foundation has created a Donor Advised Gift Fund at UWI. UWI independently evaluates recommended grantees, exercising the discretion, control, and oversight required by US laws governing international grantmaking.
