University College Cork (UCC) leads the way with facilities for Students with Disabilities

This year, 535 students registered with Disability Support Services (DSS) in UCC.
Students registered with the Service include students with sensory and physical disabilities, students with medical and mental health conditions/illnesses and students with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. The aim of the DSS is to create an inclusive learning environment where all students can maximise their potential and achieve their academic and vocational goals.  

Assistive Technology plays a pivotal role in empowering students with disabilities access the learning environment on parity to their peers.
Assistive technology is any piece of equipment or product that improves the functional capabilities of students with disabilities.

The new Assistive Technology (AT) Unit at UCC was officially opened by Mr Peter Brown, National Office for Equity of Access to Higher Education on December 12th 2008.

Welcoming the new resource, Mary O'Grady, UCC's Disability Support Officer said: "At UCC, students with disabilities are encouraged to participate in all aspects of the University's academic, cultural and social life. Our aim is to play a pivotal role in the assessment and training of students with disabilities, assisting them to make the optimum use of the technologies available to them and enabling each student find innovative ways of accessing their studies."

The Assistive Technology Unit is located in the Boole Library giving the students an integrated and accessible place to study in the heart of the university.  The Unit is also used by the wider educational community and training in assistive technology has been delivered this year to the Department of Education and Science Resource Teachers in second level and to teachers in the Colleges of Further Education in the Cork region. The DSS would like to build on this collaboration and maximise the potential of the assistive technology resources developed within the Unit.
