The Departments of Applied Social Studies, Sociology and General Practice, UCC will host a Seminar and Book Launch on Wednesday next, March 5th 2008.
The Seminar titled: "Money and Medicine - When "healthcare" becomes a commodity" runs from 3-5pm in Room LG51, Cavanagh Pharmacy Building. Speakers include: Andrew Herxheimer, Emeritus Fellow at the Cochrane Centre and founder of the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin and DIPEx who will speak on the topic "Medicines regulation - [long] out of joint, getting worse?" and Marie O'Connor, Press Officer with the Health Services Action Group and author of Emergency - Irish Hospitals in Chaos whose topics is: "Health for Sale? The project of privatisation in Ireland".
The seminar will be followed by the book launch of "Power, Politics and Pharmaceuticals" - Drug Regulation in Ireland in the Global Context (edited by Orla O'Donovan and Kathy Glavanis-Grantham, Cork University Press). Deirdre Madden, Chair of the University Research Ethics Board will launch the book at 5pm in the Staff Dining Room, UCC.
