UCC to host Annual Conference of the Irish Student Health Association

"Fit to work, Fit to play" is the theme of the Annual Conference of the Irish Student Health Association (ISHA) which the Student Health Department at UCC will host on Friday (7th) and Saturday (8th) March.  
The Irish Student Health Association is an association of all those who provide heath care in third level institutions in Ireland. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas among health care professionals, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychiatrists, and ancillary staff who work in third level institutions.

Professor Robbie McConnell, Acting Head of the  College of Medicine and Health at UCC will open the conference.  On Saturday morning, conference delegates will hear an expert panel discuss multiple issues affecting students in the fields of sport, university and career in a questions and answer format.  Panellists include: Dr Chris Luke, Consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine in Cork University Hospital and Mercy Hospital, Cork, Dr Tadhg O'Sullivan, General Practitioner and Sports Physician, Douglas, Cork, Dr Alan Swann, Director of Occupational Health, Imperial College, London and Dr Bernard Creedon, Cardiology Department, South Infirmary, Cork. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr Patrick Ryan, Director of the Postgraduate Training Programme, UCC.

During the conference, delegates will adjudicate on the art work of second level students from local secondary schools who were invited to participate in an art competition on the general theme "Student Life." Entries will be on exhibition during the conference with prizes presented by UCC's Vice-President for Student Experience, Con O'Brien, and Dr Mary Godfrey. Among the prizes are The Dr Robin Godfrey Memorial prize, in memory of Dr Robin Godfrey, who was the first Head of the UCC Student Health Department along with first prize and two runner-up prizes.

Friday evening's proceedings will take place in Jury's Hotel, Western Road and on Saturday, the conference moves to Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, College Road commencing at 9.30am. Delegates can attend any two of the forty-five minute educational workshops during the morning's proceedings.  The afternoon's programme will feature Dr Alan Swann Director of Occupational Health, Imperial College, London who will deliver a lecture on "Fitness to Practice - UK Perspective".
