21.08.2008

As a new academic year is about to begin at University College Cork, a number of students from the university are commencing a study abroad period at a range of universities and colleges in the United States of America and Canada.
Thirty six students from a variety of disciplines including Biological Sciences, Commerce, Drama and Theatre Studies, Engineering, Government, Law, Music and Physics, will spend either a semester or academic year at one of UCC’s partner universities in the US or Canada.

Twenty one students from the Faculty of Commerce (College of Business and Law) have opted to spend the third year of their BComm programme in business schools at Babson College near Boston, Boston College, Suffolk University in Boston, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Pace University in New York City, Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, North Carolina State University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Cincinnati in Ohio and the University of Ottawa.

A group of Law students will spend the academic year at Temple University Law School in Philadelphia and the St Louis University Law School in Missouri.  Students from other disciplines are taking the opportunity to study at Boston College, the University of Maine, the University of Montana, the University of California campuses at Davis, Santa Cruz and San Diego, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Washington College in Maryland and Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

“UCC is delighted that an increasing number of our students are taking the opportunity to spend a study abroad period in the US or Canada,” said Marita Foster, International Education Officer (Acting), at UCC.  “The feedback that we received from UCC students who have studied in North American educational institutions in the past has been overwhelmingly positive and the students frequently comment that is a life-changing experience and one of the most rewarding things they have ever done.”  Ms Foster also pointed out that a study abroad experience can enhance the value of a degree and boost employment opportunities.  “A student who has studied abroad is generally self-motivated, willing to embrace challenges and able to cope with diverse problems and situations, and these are all very positive attributes in the eyes of any prospective employer.”
