UCC students depart for China
21.03.2008

UCC yesterday (March 20th 2008) bade farewell to six of its students who are heading to Shanghai to study in China for three months. The group represents the first cohort of postgraduate students from UCC's Irish Institute of Chinese Studies.
UCC's Irish Institute for Chinese Studies is the only Irish university offering postgraduate programmes in contemporary Chinese culture and business.  The programmes, currently in their first year, are offered in Higher Diploma and Masters level. Director of the Institute, Professor Fan Hong explains: "Students study the language, business and culture. We aim to help students enter into the Asian market aware of the cultural and political situation that exists."

The MA in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business is a one-year full-time programme designed for students with some experience of Chinese language and culture.  Students study at UCC for two semesters and in China for one while doing a work placement. By the end of the course, the students will have received intensive training in Chinese language, business, politics and culture. For students who don't have a background in Chinese language and culture, the one-year Higher Diploma in Contemporary Chinese Culture and Business is on offer.

There are at present 180 Chinese students studying at UCC with a further140 Irish/European students taking Chinese studies degree courses and evening classes. UCC also offers a BA and BComm in Chinese Studies. A second group of 12 undergraduate students will leave for China in late August and remain there for one year.

Of the six students departing for China, three are Irish: Ciarán Griffin, Michelle Li, James Cuffe while Francesco Scanlone is from Italy, Helen Murphy from England and Jacek Woch is Polish. Four are studying for an MA while the remaining two are Higher Diploma students.

Speaking at the farewell ceremony, Professor Paul Giller, Registrar and Senior Vice President Academic at UCC said, "China, the emerging economic superpower of the twenty-first century, has attracted the attention of Ireland and of UCC. In recent years, we have established academic links with Chinese universities that have led to a rapid increase in the number of Chinese students studying at UCC. We have also established Chinese Studies degree courses from undergraduate to postgraduate at UCC which have attracted the attention of Irish and European students. The purpose of the university degree courses is to promote mutual understanding and respect between the Irish and the Chinese and to produce future Irish businessmen and women, politicians, diplomats, educators and researchers with expertise on China for Irish economic and intercultural development."

Also present at the ceremony was Councillor Donal Counihan, Lord Mayor along with representatives from Cork-Shanghai Group and Cork Chamber.
