UCC President awarded Honorary Professorship by Beijing Technology and Business University
14.10.2008

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, who is currently on a visit to China has been awarded an Honorary Professorship by Beijing Technology and Business University (BTBU).
Dr Murphy described the award as a great honour both for himself and UCC "since BTBU has only awarded this professorship to two distinguished scholars both of whom were Nobel Prize Laureates."

During the course of his visit to BTBU, Dr Murphy held meetings with Professor Tan Xiangyong, President of BTBU and Professor Sun Baoguo,  Vice-President of BTBU.  A Memorandum of Co-operation between UCC and BTBU was signed by both universities followed by discussions on the future collaboration in the areas of postgraduate students exchange, staff exchange and research projects.

BTBU is a university consisting of three institutions with a student population of 15,000.  It is famous for its cutting edge research and its capacity to adapt its programmes to reflect changing conditions in the workplace. UCC began its co-operation with BTBU in 2005. BTBU regards UCC as its most important partner in Ireland and Europe. There are now 50 students from BTBU studying in the 2+2 and 3+1 programmes in UCC in the areas of Computer Science, Financial Economics and Food Science. The first four students from the Food Science 2+2 programme graduated at UCC in September.

Following the meeting, Dr Murphy delivered a speech to the students and staff of BTBU. He emphasized that both Ireland and China value the importance of education. As the Chinese proverb puts it: "If you want one year of prosperity, grow grain, if you want 10 years of prosperity, grow trees. If you want 100 years of prosperity, grow people." UCC and BTBU now are working together to grow people for one hundred years of prosperity. After his speech Louise Tobin, the Director of International Students Recruitment and Strategy, presented an introduction to UCC to the students who intend to study in Ireland in the future.

The UCC delegation consists of UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, Professor Fan Hong, Director of Irish Institute of Chinese Studies at UCC and Ms Louise Tobin, Director of International Students Recruitment and Strategy.
