UCC hosts Lebor Gabála Érenn Seminar
05.11.2008

The tenth Annual Seminar jointly organised by the Combined Departments of Irish, UCC, and the Irish Texts Society, will take place on Saturday next, November 8th 2008.
This one-day event was initiated in 1999 to commemorate the centenary of the foundation of the Irish Texts Society. Founded in London, the ITS was not attached to any academic institution but has been and continues to be administered by a voluntary committee. The current president is Professor Pádraig Ó Riain, Emeritus Professor of Early Irish at University College, Cork.

The sixty-one volumes produced by the Society to date, with their handsome green binding and gold lettering, comprise scholarly editions of Irish texts, from the Early, Medieval and Modern periods. Perhaps the best known volume, which was not part of any series, is Dinneen’s Dictionary, the first edition of which appeared in 1904.

Each year the UCC Seminar has had as its theme the re-assessment by a panel of distinguished scholars, both national and international, of a volume or a set of  volumes from the Society’s Main Series. This year’s programme, which deals with the five-volume Lebor Gabála Érenn (The Book of the Taking of Ireland) includes speakers from the Netherlands,  Ireland and the United States. The Proceedings of the previous seminar are published  annually as a volume in the Society’s Subsidiary Series and at Saturday’s event, the nineteenth subsidiary volume, a re-assessment of Keating’s History of Ireland (Foras Feasa ar Érinn) will be launched.

The Seminar will take place at Room 212, O’Rahilly Building, UCC starting at 9.15 am.
