UCC hosts International Cultures Festival 2008
18.02.2008

International Cultures Festival opens tomorrow (Tuesday, February 19th) at UCC. Organised by Áras na Mac Léinn, in association with the International Education Office, UCC, the festival commences with the official opening by Helen Tauro, Project Manager with the 1,000 Families Exhibition at 1pm in Devere Hall, Student Centre.
Now in its fifth year, the festival is a celebration of the many diverse nationalities and cultures on and off campus at UCC. At present, there are 83 different nationalities at UCC.

Highlights of the festival include "Tastes of the World" - Food Fair (Tuesday, 1pm) at which the culinary delights of the various countries can be savoured plus Live Performances (lunchtime on both days) and an International Cultures exhibition which can be viewed from 10am to 5pm on both days.

An International World Cup will take place each day of the festival from 3pm - 5pm at the Mardyke Arena.

This year, the Festival is joined by the SUAS Society at UCC. Suas is a movement dedicated to supporting quality education in targeted under-resourced communities. SUAS will exhibit the "1000 Families" exhibition - a series of portraits of families from all over the world from Ireland to Indonesia by photographer Uwe Ommer. This exhibition will be on display in Devere Hall from Tuesday to Thursday.

The festival closes on Wednesday night (20th) with a Céilí at Devere Hall (7pm).

UCC now has an international student population of over 2,000 from 83 countries.  According to Suzanne Buckley, Support Officer at the International Education Office "International Cultures Week is a forum to learn, explore, share and exchange ideas and information about different traditions, cultures and values and provides a platform to share an understanding of the many cultures and traditions within the UCC community."  During the festival, the participating international students show an incredible generosity of knowledge and kindness of spirit; each of them proud to share their respective culture and enjoy learning from one another", added Gráinne Thompson, Events Manager at Áras na Mac Léinn.
