UCC hosts First Public Lecture to celebrate 'International Year of Planet Earth'
09.01.2008

2008 is the UNESCO 'International Year of Planet Earth' (IYPE). The first of many initiatives will be a Public Lecture series taking place around the country.
The first of these public lectures will take place in UCC on Thursday, January 17th at 8pm in G1, Kane Building (to be repeated in Dublin Castle the following day). Hosted by the Cork Geological Association and the Department of Geology, UCC, the lecture titled "Life and the Earth: Interlocking Histories" will be delivered by Professor Aubrey Manning. All are welcome.

In his lecture, Professor Manning will illustrate how the Earth sciences and biology come together to help us understand something of how planet Earth 'works', how it has interacted with life in the past and how we can best predict the future. We are facing a unique set of problems now and the fascinating science organised around the IYPE will not only offer some solutions but hopefully inspire us better to cherish our beautiful planet and learn not to take it for granted.

Aubrey is Emeritus Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests cover animal behaviour, development and evolution and he has long been involved in environmental issues. A distinguished broadcaster, his television series have included 'Seven Wonders of the Earth' and 'Earth Story'.
