UCC hosts 5th Celtic Conference in Classics
11.07.2008

Over 100 speakers and delegates from all over the world, including well-established academics as well as younger scholars, have assembled at UCC this week for the 5th Celtic Conference in Classics.
Hosted by UCC's Classics Department, this major international conference is a biennial event and exists to promote the best Classical scholarship in the Celtic countries and attract leading scholars from all over the world. The proceedings of numerous panels have already been published in book form, from several presses internationally, including the Classical Press of Wales.

The Celtic Conference in Classics began in 2000 with a meeting of some 80 international scholars at NUI Maynooth. Its biennial meetings rotate between the Celtic countries: thus 2002, University of Glasgow; 2004, University of Rennes II (Brittany); 2006, Lampeter (Wales); 2008 represents the beginning of the second cycle, which begins again in Ireland.

This year's conference comprises seven plenary lectures as well as a large number of papers (in English and French) in seven parallel panels covering a wide range of areas in the field of Classics, including: "Vision and Power" (Chairs: Nancy Rabinowitz, Sue Blundell, Douglas Cairns); "La religion des femmes en pays grec" (Chairs: Lydie Bodiou, Veronique Mehl); "Aristocracy, Elites and Social Mobility in Ancient Societies" (Chairs: Nick Fisher, Hans van Wees); "Old Comedy" (Chair: Keith Sidwell); "Authority and Authenticity in Ancient Narrative" (Chairs: John Morgan, Mirjam Platinga, Ian Repath); "Herodotos and Thucydides on Sparta" (Chair: Stephen Hodkinson, Ellen Millender, Anton Powell); "The Late Antique Chronicle and its Continuators" (Chair: David Woods).

Dr Konstantin Doulamis, UCC conference organiser, stated: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome to the Classics Department at UCC such a diverse group of international experts in the field, from as many as 53 academic institutions around the world."

This meeting of the Celtic Conference has been generously supported by funding and administrative help from the Classics Department at UCC. UCC's College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences has also provided significant funding. Financial support is gratefully acknowledged from the Classical Association and the Society for Hellenic Studies both of whom have given grants towards student travel. The Celtic Conference in Classics is sponsored by the Classical Press of Wales.
